The territory has a population of 459 thousand inhabitants and is home to the University of Parma, which has about 34,000 enrolled students (RER, 2023-24). The main industries are agribusiness, building and mechanical engineering and there are various integrations between these and the European Food Safety agency EFSA which is based in Parma. Indeed, Parma is the centre of the regional Food Valley. Pharmaceutical industry is also very relevant. The province offers a rich variety of historical and natural attractions such as art cities, castles and villages, Apennine tours. Parma has been the Italian Capital of Culture in 2020\/2021 and a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy since 2015.
