The first confirmed attestation of the historical building, originally known as “Casa Ghigi”, dates back to the late 16th century. The state of conservation of the property is sufficient as it requires maintenance and technological modernisation. The urban complex, used as the headquarters of the municipal registry offices for decades, is currently lacking the features necessary for this original purpose, which is why the municipality of Ravenna began transfer of the aforementioned institutional activities to another location (a new office complex at Via Berlinguer 58) some time ago. The real-estate complex, of recognised historical and artistic interest since it is included in the list of properties subject to notification pursuant to Italian Law 364/2009, has been declared of cultural interest pursuant to Article 10, paragraphs 1 and 12 of Italian Legislative Decree no. 42 of 22 January 2004, and therefore remains subject to all the protection provisions contained in the aforementioned Legislative Decree (Provision for the declaration of cultural interest no. 2953 of 18.03.2013).

The building is located in the city’s historic centre adjacent to the pedestrianised area and a short distance from the main Piazza del Popolo, monuments and UNESCO sites, and therefore from the commercial and tourist area par excellence. It is located in proximity to public services such as the Prefecture and Town Hall, and in a central position between the port and the main infrastructure connections: State Road 16 Adriatica, State Road 309 Romea and the A14-dir connection. It is in an area well served by public transport services, with one of the main hubs less than 100 metres away. It is approximately a 10-minute walk from the railway station, which connects it with Italy's main cities and the international airport of Bologna. The building is also very close to the commercial port and the passenger and cruise terminal.
